Fish-X The Global Fisheries and the Digital Transition.

The Fish-X project, funded by the EU’s Horizon Europe program, aims to make the European Union’s coastal fishing industry sustainable. The three-year project is being carried out by nine European organizations, including TransMarTech Schleswig-Holstein (TMT), EU Tech Chamber (EUTECH), north.io and OURZ from Germany, Collecte Localisation Satellites (CLS) from France, Sciaena from Portugal, WWF European Policy Office (EPO) from Belgium with the branch organizations ANP | WWF Portugal, WWF Adria and WWF MMI, as well as Low Impact Fishers of Europe (LIFE) from Belgium and Irish Islands Marine Resource Organisation (IIMRO) from Ireland.

What is the aim of the project?

The Fish-X project is developing a fisheries data space (Fish-X) and a platform based on intelligent, orchestrated architecture and Gaia-X technology. These enable users to make better use of data for fishing methods, higher yields and the protection of endangered fish species. The project also streamlines monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) processes to support the implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). It encourages collaboration between different stakeholders, including fisheries, fishermen’s associations, regulators, ministries and policy makers, to develop and refine new technologies in the context of CFP changes.

Stakeholder engagement model from Fish-X

A little history. How did Fish-X come about?

In line with the objectives of the EU Green Deal and the Farm-to-Fork Strategy, the EU Common Fisheries Policy and the EU 2030 Digital Compass, the Fish-X project – supported by the Horizon Europe program – was launched in 2022 after the matchmaking event in autumn 2021.

The Impact Funding Europe (IFE) team presented various EU calls during the matchmaking event, put together the project consortium and supported us in the application process until the successful kick-off of the project in June 2022.
